RESISTANCE & REJECTION
Acts 7 contains the answer of Stephen to the question of his critics (cf Acts 6.13-14). He ignores the deceit and slander. He turns their attention to the story of scripture and responds to his opponents with the Word of God. What they charge is new and blasphemy he counters. God’s rescue through the gospel began long ago with Abraham. The prophets are the key witness. Israel time and time again rejected by God’s servants and his word. Nothing changes with Jesus. Except Jesus is the true and greatest prophet. As he draws to a conclusion, he offers an invitation through rebuke. You can continue to reject Jesus and resist the Spirit. He implicitly invites them to receive Jesus as Savior and yield to the Spirit. Resistance leads to rejection. Stubbornness, pride, and rebellion has so hardened their hearts they once again kill one of God’s choice messengers. Stephen becomes the first martyr. Like Jesus, he dies outside of the city with grace on his tongue. He is a witness in his life by his words and in his death.
